Art Club by Linda Liang

Did you notice the amazing and giant portrait of Jesus Christ crucified out of many origami butterflies in the gym? Have you ever wondered who made that great art work? Have you ever been curious about the process of this artwork? Known as the MVL Spring Sacred Concert art project, it includes over 500 origami butterflies, which were contributed by students, teachers, parents, alumni, grandparents, friends, and neighbors. Then, all of these colorful butterflies were sorted and put up together to create the delicate artwork by a group of people in a club called “Art Club”. “This is a club where everyone can enjoy an easier way to have art” said by Mr. Jasperson.
The club was started in 1994, even before the formal art classes; also, there wasn’t an art room at that time. Teachers and students started the club spontaneously, called by the love of art in their heart, operating their own art factory and offering themselves a chance of seizing the happiness from art. Then, in 2001, Mr. Jasperson came to work at MVL and lead art club to a brand new world. Inspired by a university making a giant mural to decorate the Christmas concerts, Mr.J decided that the club should become a service organization to make big projects for MVL Christmas, Spring Sacred and Prism Concerts and help the school as much as the club can, glorifying God with art and talent. The art club has completed about 25 big projects over the past 11 years. There are also some previous art works displayed in the hallway outside Mr.Wels’s room.
The club members meet on every Tuesday and Thursday after school. This is also a beneficial fact for busy people, especially during the sports season that anyone from any grade can start at any time they want. There is no time limit for the club, which also provides a relaxed atmosphere. “I like the club because it’s a place to hang out with people who like art”, said Emily Luehmann.  “Anyone can come, you don’t have to be necessary super good at it”, said Katie Sehloff. The club gives an easier opportunity for people to participate in art and enjoy it. There is no such pressure in the club as in an art class; all you have to do is to give it a try. “There are cool people and cool staff in the club”, said Ella Andreason.
Normally when the club starts a project, Mr. J will draw a model or outline, while students do other drawings and paintings. After dedicating to a project for a long time, people will feel incredibly content about it and can be more energetic and happier. Besides the big project, the club works on individual artworks and MVL T-shirts. Members can also bring treats and snacks, which add more fun to the club. Come to the club and enjoy funny art time with your friends, it is a good relaxation after a heavy day’s work.
