During summer vacation, everyone travels. Some travel
to one of the expansive oceans or to a relaxing summer cabin. Some travel to
work, and some on simple day trips. But for two of MVL’s juniors, Taylor Bode
and Gabby Miller, their summer travelling took them overseas to Siegen, Germany
from June 5-20.
Some of the
upperclassmen may remember that last year, Senor Gunderson announced the
opportunity for students to observe the schooling system and culture of
Germany. Two of MVL’s juniors, Gabby Miller and Taylor Bode volunteered to
travel overseas. While over there, they attended school for three half days
whereupon they observed an English class for grade-schoolers. Schooling was not
the only opportunity for these two to experience, though. They got the chance
to watch the Euro-cup from a large TV screen in the town square, participate in
a rope-climbing course, and of course, do some sight-seeing.
In Germany, they
both met several people, including the German high schoolers that will be
coming here to observe MVL later in the year. Both Miller and Bode enjoyed
their host families. In fact, Taylor showed a great deal of excitement that the
father of her host family was the Mayor of Siegen.
When questioned
what Miller and Bode miss most of Germany, they both responded with the answer,
“The people and the food.” They, then, went into detail about a sandwich they
ate called a doner. The meat is cooked on a vertical spinner, shaved off, and
wrapped in a flatbread. They both said that it was so good and really, REALLY
want another one.
Between the food,
people, culture, and activities they did in Germany, Bode and Miller got to have
a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
