Sept. Sports update

Football:
Ryan Grunke #2
By Larissa DeRousse
Ryan Grunke is a senior who has been playing football since freshman year for MVL.  I interviewed him to see how his season is going, and to see where it could possibly go.
How’s your season going so far?
It’s alright, we are 1-2. We could easily be 3-0, but we let a couple slip away.
Being quarterback, do you ever feel like it’s too much pressure?
At times there is pressure, but it’s just like every other position.  Everyone does their job and beats the pressure, the team looks good.
Who are the captains?
Sam Dose, Matthew Tessmer, Tyler Mielke, and me.
Why do you guys think you got chosen to be captains?
Well the seniors from last year and the players chose us; so that means we display good leadership and will lead our team to be the best it can be.

Soccer: Shelby and Ryan
By: Rachel Holt
Shelby Smith and Ryan Plath are both seniors at MVL who play soccer co-op with New Ulm Cathedral.  I interviewed them to see how their seasons are going so far.
How is your season going?
Shelby: Our team is doing really well right now! We won the Loyola tournament and we are undefeated in conference games.
Ryan: We are 2-4. However, we have a very young team that should be very good in the next few years.
How do you feel about it being your last year?
Shelby: It is pretty sad that this is my last season of soccer. I’ve gotten to be great friends with many of my teammates and after this season I won’t see them much.
Ryan: I am going to miss playing with all the guys on the team. I have loved playing soccer the last 3 years.

Tennis:

Laura Albrecht

By Jessica Tressler

Laura is a senior here at MVL. She plays tennis co-op with New Ulm High School. She also plays number one singles for their team.
How do you think your season is going so far?
Looking at our record not so good, but there are still a lot of girls that are progressing.
What would you like to accomplish for you and your team for the season?
To improve our record from last year.
Why do you love tennis?
It’s just a lot of fun to play and the coaches are great, they make the practices fun. You also get a very nice tan.
How does it feel being the only one from MVL on the team?
Lonely.
How long have you been playing tennis?
I started as a freshman.

Volleyball: Carlie Maasz #8
By Mariah Schoof
Our volleyball team this year got off to a rough start, but is getting better. Losing the first couple games of the season didn’t bring them down. However, when talking to Captain Carlie Maasz, she says they are getting better and better every day.
How do you think your team is doing this year?
The beginning started out a little rough but we have improved so much from the first day of practice and our first game that I would be scared to face us later in the season.
Are you doing as well as you expected?
So much better! The younger girls have really stepped up and adjusted to Varsity level faster than expected.
What are some of the goals you’d like to accomplish this season?
As a team our biggest goal is to play in November.
Are there any teams you would really like to beat?
St. Mary’s because we shouldn’t have lost to them the first time and GFW as always.
How are the JV and freshman teams doing?
They are improving just as rapidly as the varsity! Every game they get better and more fun to watch.

Also, this year we have two new coaches. JV Coach Kelly Hauf and Freshman Coach Katie Scherer. They both have played and know a lot about volleyball and are great coaches to have in the program. A big event coming up for the volleyball team during homecoming week is the Dig Pink night happening on October 2nd. If you haven’t made it to a game yet this year, this would be the perfect one to come and watch! They can always use the support.

Cross Country: Zack Scharlaman

By Mariah Schoof
The cross country team might be a group that you don’t get to watch too often, since they never have a meet here at MVL. I asked Zack a few questions about the team this year.
How is your season going so far
Good, I got my Personal Record the first meet of the year! Which usually doesn’t happen.
What’s your personal record?
Now, 20:30.
What’s your favorite fart of practice?
Arguing with Grefe over pointless things and making a big deal about them.
Goals for the season?
Run a sub 20:00 minute 5K

If you would like to come and watch the cross country team this year, their closest meet is in SE Thursday October 4th at 4:30pm.   They would love the support!
