“In no particular order, would the representatives from the following teams come forward to be recognized. Medford, Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School…”
March 28 was a big night for the MVL speech team. The team had been working very hard in the meets leading up to the night of subsections. On this night, many members of the team were given awards. (Abigail got first in Extemporaneous Reading, while Hannah received second. Libby won first place in Poetry. Kincaid received fourth in Humorous and Ari got sixth. Brianna won fifth in Informative.) At the end of the individual awards, captains from the top teams were asked to come forward to receive an award or recognition. MVL’s team of just eight people had been very close to making it into the sweepstakes at many of the meets, often being only one place away. Captains Abigail, Brianna, and Hannah have been wishing for their team to make a comeback after spending many years in the shadows. This season, the goal was to make it into the team sweepstakes (where 3-5 teams with the most points are given awards). Competing against much larger teams like St. Peter, Loyola, and Fairmont made this a difficult task.
When MVL was called down to the gym floor, there was premature cheering from the Chargers, along with confused glances in their direction from everyone else. No one else in the gym knew how hard the team had worked all year to get there. They probably did not even know how big of a deal it was for our little team of eight to beat teams of thirty. The MVL Speech team received fourth overall at this tournament.
The coaches and captains are so proud of their team. They congratulate and thank all of the team members for a great season, and wish those who are moving to sections luck!
