Christmas Concert Artwork by Jason Jaspersen

The artwork produced for this concert brings together unwanted office products and an unfinished Spanish Cathedral.  1849 donated dark purple sticky notes, some abandoned chalk board chalk, and out-of-date rolls of calculator paper were meticulously crafted, organized, and assembled to create this artwork.
The artwork shows Joseph standing behind Mary as she crouches to hold the infant Jesus.  The students of the MVL Art Club applied measurements from the wall and the size of a sticky note to calculate, draw and label a grid on a printout of the original sculpture.  Several gridded printouts were made for reference and one was cut into labeled bits.  Each piece of the grid (about ¼”x ¼” each) was then hand drawn and numbered on a sticky note with chalk.  Small pieces were carefully stored in labeled jars and sticky notes stored on labeled pages in a binder.  The image was brought together as sticky notes were glued to calculator tape in vertical strips.
The imagery is based on a stone sculpture from the facade of La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain.  This modern cathedral is a work in progress begun in 1882 and expected to be finished within the next 20 years.  With a variety of styles and materials the structure is an expressive,  fresh take on the well established medieval formulas.  Great art is a reflection of its own time.  With its disjointed, diverse, assembly of sensibilities La Sagrada Familia is an  expression of the vibrance, change, and turbulence of the 20 century.
